Theatre

How I fell in love with Theatre

In 8th grade, when I was a teacher’s aide for 7th Grade English, Ms. Young and I had an idea to put on a play since so many students took an interest in The Outsiders. With minimal experience and no theatre program, we built the play from the ground up.

I cut the script, made a rehearsal schedule, and helped cast the play. The auditions got so popular with students that we ended up with two casts: the “Do it for Johnny Cast” and the “Stay Golden Cast”. At that moment it became clear to me that theatre is a way to share stories and bring people together.

I helped with directing and stage management throughout the process. When Mrs. Young felt unsure, I was there to support her. Seeing our idea come to life made me realize how meaningful my work can be. As we sold out show after show, I felt even more confident in what we had created.

Being on stage for final bows is something I always remember. But we did more than just put on a show, we created a legacy. Now, The Outsiders is put on every other year at Stanley Middle School. Ms. Young even left her job as an English teacher to become Stanley’s drama teacher.
