🎭The SpongeBob Musical – Student Director, Choreographer and Featured Dancer

🎬My Role

As Student Director, Choreographer, and a Featured Dancer, I played a key leadership and creative role in shaping this large-scale production. My responsibilities included:

  • Planning blocking and helping guide scene direction alongside the director
  • Meeting weekly with the director and monthly with the broader production team
  • Supporting actors through individual scene work and character interpretation
  • Organizing and updating the production calendar and rehearsal content
  • Managing communications via Remind and keeping all team members informed
  • Serving as a liaison between actors, crew, and the adult production staff
  • Assisting in costume, design, and concept discussions
  • Teaching, monitoring, and choreographing dance numbers
  • Performing as one of five featured dancers
  • Learning harmonies and vocal parts to support from backstage
  • Running preshow checks, ensuring actors were in places, and interfacing with the booth
  • Managing social media and organizing bonding activities to maintain high morale

This production was one of the most complex and collaborative projects I’ve worked on, combining artistic vision with community-building.

✍️ Director’s Note

Our vision for The SpongeBob Musical was to craft an underwater fantasy that felt both magical and grounded. While the design reflected the playful, surreal world of the original TV show, we directed the actors to root their characters in emotional truth, making the themes of perseverance, inclusivity, and hope feel strikingly relevant to our world today.

To support this vision, I advocated for weekly one-on-one meetings with the director and monthly team check-ins between student leaders and the adult production team, ensuring unified communication across costumes, crew, makeup, and more.

I also took initiative in choreography—creating, teaching, and maintaining the movement throughout the production—while dancing in the show myself. Balancing artistic input and logistical coordination helped me grow tremendously as both a leader and performer.
