A Midsummer's Night Dream

📖 About the Play

Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a magical comedy of love and miscommunication. Set in an enchanted forest, the play follows four lovers, a troupe of amateur actors, and a group of fairies whose worlds collide in a tangled, hilarious, and poetic night.

Filled with mistaken identities, mischievous spells, and lyrical beauty, this play offers endless opportunities for theatrical creativity and deep character exploration.

🎭 A Midsummer’s Night Dream – Student Director

🎬 My Role

As Student Director, I played a hands-on leadership role in all aspects of the rehearsal process and production. My responsibilities included:

  • Ensuring actors arrived on time and were ready to work
  • Blocking the entire show and managing all entrances/exits
  • Coaching actors on movement, character motivation, and staging
  • Working one-on-one with actors on specific scenes and beats
  • Overseeing cast morale through bonding activities and celebrations
  • Managing the show’s social media and promotional content
  • During performances, helping coordinate backstage flow and interfacing with the booth

Additionally, I initiated and led several creative components that expanded the world of the play beyond the script.

✍️ Director’s Note

My creative vision for A Midsummer Night’s Dream centered on emphasizing the whimsy, mischief, and enchantment of the fairy world while grounding the human storylines in emotional realism.

One of my proudest contributions was the interactive pre-show experience, which I developed and directed in collaboration with the fairy ensemble. The fairies engaged with audience members before the curtain, dusting the space with energy, offering symbolic gifts, and creating a world that blurred the line between performer and spectator. This gave the show a magical, immersive quality that welcomed audiences into the dream before the first line was spoken.

To support this, I created and led biweekly “fairy workshops”, where we developed ensemble character backstories, practiced movement exercises, and established tone, intention, and rituals for the pre-show.

📰 Reviews & Commentary

“[A Midsummer Night’s Dream] is very artistically and creatively done, especially with the costumes and the makeup bringing it to life. It’s one of the more fun and whimsical parts of Shakespeare, and it’s so much fun to see every day.”
Everest Tomasello, Student Director

“The plot of A Midsummer Night’s Dream involves a diverse range of characters and intertwined narratives. A group of actors attempts to put on a play, while four lovers quarrel and fights between fairy royalty spill into the human world. These plot lines all interconnect to tell one overarching story combining love and chaos.”
