On the Razzle

📖 About the Play

On the Razzle, written by Tom Stoppard, is a fast-paced farce set in 19th-century Vienna. The play follows two mischievous shop clerks who sneak away to the big city in search of adventure, resulting in mistaken identities, slapstick chaos, and witty wordplay. Its humor lies in physical comedy, absurd misunderstandings, and the challenge of balancing period authenticity with Stoppard’s modern wit.

🎭 On the Razzle – Student Director

🎬 My Role

As Student Director, I directed and shaped every part of the creative process, from artistic vision to technical execution. My responsibilities included:

  • Creating and distributing the rehearsal schedule
  • Blocking and teaching all scenes
  • Coaching actors on physicality and emotional portrayal
  • Clarifying the storyline and interpreting 1800s slang
  • Guiding lighting, prop, and sound design
  • Managing deck crew during rehearsals and performances

✍️ Director’s Note

My creative vision for On the Razzle was to celebrate the chaos and charm of farce through playful visuals and dynamic performances. I incorporated bright lighting and abstract props—like the horse “Lightning,” represented by a tricycle with a horse’s head—to highlight the show’s whimsy.

While keeping costumes, hair, and set designs true to the 1800s, I introduced imaginative, modern touches that made the world feel alive and theatrical. I focused heavily on physical comedy to make the humor universally engaging, and wove the period dialogue with contemporary comedic timing, allowing the story’s joy and absurdity to resonate with today’s audiences.
